Downtown Chemical Smell
Thursday, January 25th, 2024

We are currently aware of a strong chemical smell coming from the sewer and or storm drain lines in the upper South Side areas to include Prospect and Cadwallader streets as well as downtown near Pickers Pub & Grub on High and Bank streets. Brownsville Municipal Sewage Authority is also aware of the situation and have been working diligently to try to find and isolate the source of the chemical as well as flush the necessary sewer lines in the affected areas. We have also been in contact with representatives from PA American Water who report there are NO contaminants in the water lines and that all water lines are SAFE for use.

This appears to be an isolated incident in the sewer/storm drain lines in the areas mentioned above. Mayor Swords, local government and state officials from the DEP are also working together to try to rectify the situation. We encourage residents to check their properties to ensure that all chemical products are properly stored and that no chemical products are seeping into the ground and or drains. Also, please DO NOT dump any chemical products such as: gasoline, kerosine, paint thinner and solvents such as turpentine into any drainage system. We encourage residents to continue to call 911 at any time for any and all related emergencies.
